When buying a specific type of van it can sometimes be worrying whether you’re purchasing the right model, make and style for you and/or your business. With refrigerated vehicles in particular, it’s not only a set of specifications that may differ from a usual vehicle and so, listed below are the main things you should consider to get you started.
What are you using it for?
This may be an obvious answer, however when relying on a specific refrigeration system in a vehicle, you need to consider all options. Whether you’re a small local food distributor delivering to your weekly customers, or a large commercial fresh produce supplier, you’ll need to decide on the size of the van you need, as well as the level of controlled temperature.
Whatever you’re looking for, there’s a type of refrigerated van to suit your ‘load’ and cater for the distance you’ll be travelling.
Have you established your budget?
If it’s a business investment, or a personal purchase, calculating your budget will allow you to buy your fridge van with ease. Depending on your budget, you’ll need to decide whether it’s a new van or used vehicle that you’ll be looking for.
Subtract personal bills, property bills, supplier fees and any other outgoings from your earnings each month and you should be left with a nice number to use when researching your vehicle dealers. This could be extremely useful if you are considering a loan, or vehicle finance to purchase your van.
Have you researched dealers?
Make sure you research your dealers thoroughly, not only by comparing prices from your budget, but also by looking for trusted companies with strong reviews and a trustworthy source to discuss your current financial situation (if needed). Word of mouth is also a great tool to use when asking around for the best deals.
Have you looked at the vehicle specifications?
Most of this part will be fairly obvious to a vehicle driver, however when it comes to which refrigeration system is installed in the van, it’s best to do your research. Whether it’s a new Hubbard refrigeration system, or a used GAH Lance refrigeration system, there are many different systems that your fridge vehicle could be fitted with.
As well as making sure the inside of your van is tip top condition, make sure that your new or used vehicle comes with a nice long warranty and MOT and that your van has passed it’s way through a multi point checking system to ensure the fresh produce you’re transporting stays fresh.
Read ALL the small print
It’s important when making any kind of large purchase to always read the small print and ensure that you understand everything before providing any personal details and payment.
A good tip is to take a family member or friend with you who may be more experienced in this area and ensure that you always have a second opinion on all your decisions.
